Eugène de Beauharnais was the son of Alexandre de Beauharnais and Josephine de Tascher de La Pagerie (the future Josephine Napoleon). After the marriage of Josephine and Napoleon, Eugène was adopted by Napoleon (but was not considered heir to the throne). He served in various military and political capacities for Napoleon, including command of the Army of Italy.
